How to change user's email
Added by Marcus Liebhardt over 9 years ago
Hello everyone!
I’m wondering what the correct way is to change a user’s email.
In my particular case, I have invited a specific user using his private email first. Now, I like to change his email to his company email address. I like to highlight that we use the option “Login with Google”.
I already tried to edit this user’s profile changing both his login and email to the company address. However, this doesn’t allow him to login with his company email address.
This user has already been assigned many work packages, so I like to avoid deleting the account completely and setting up a new one.
Appreciating your help!

Hey Marcus
unfortunately it’s currently not yet possible to change that as a user. It’s definitely a feature which will come. I can’t say when yet, though.
Is your OpenProject instance on openproject.com or is it self hosted? I’m assuming the former.
What we could do is have your colleague register a new account using his company email address.
Then I could swap emails* by hand.
Once I did that I can then delete the obsolete account.

To be more specific: the google accounts. The new account is necessary as a user has to login via their Google account for us to get the associated unique account ID from Google. That ID is what’s used to identify the user as opposed to their email address since with google one’s email can be anything you like (m.kahl@finn.de -> m.kahl+op@finn.de -> m.kahl+spam@finn.de -> etc.).Markus Kahl wrote:
Would it be possible to do that as an admin?
Will do that.
Thanks for the quick reply!

I’m afraid not. With ‘user’ I was referring to OpenProject users in general as opposed to me.
And even for me we need that separate, new account to pull it off.
Once we have the feature I was talking about everyone can do it themselves.
Just let me know when your colleague has created the new account.
I will need to know the two gmail addresses (old and new).
You can send them to me via encrypted email to m.kahl@finn.de.
