Email test fails

When trying to setup email notifications, I am unable to send an email. I believe I have the email configuration correct, because if I change the settings to settings known to be incorrect, I receive an error that indicates that setting is incorrect.

If I have the settings set in the method that I believe to be correct, and press the “Send a test email”, it things for a little while, and then gives this error:

Proxy Error

The proxy server received an invalid response from an upstream server.
The proxy server could not handle the request GET /admin/test_email.

Reason: Error reading from remote server

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated,

Anyone have any thoughts or suggestions?

Can anyone give me any suggestions on where I could get a more detailed log of what is failing, so I can at least look down the correct path?
