Newbie Questions about work packages and general usage

Added by Mario Ganz over 8 years ago

Yay, I managed to install Openproject 4.0 and it is running nicely.
I want to coordinate an already running project based in higher education on education. Thus, a completely non technical project. :-D

I hava a structure which is divided into workpackages 1 - 8 which contain general descriptions of the specific project part. These work packages then contain 27 deliverables in total.
These deliverables have deadlines and a period which they are running, e.g. Deliverable 1, Report running from 01.10.2013 to 31.03.2015.
Therefore I need a structure like this

Project

| Workpackage 1 -> description
|---- Deliverable 1 -> task
|---- Deliverable 2 -> product
|---- Deliverable n -> event
| Workpackage 2 -> description
|---- Deliverable 1 -> report
|---- Deliverable n -> whatever
| Workpackage 8 -> description
|---- Deliverable 27 -> ...

Deliverables in OP confuse me, because they always demand a task. I would like to reflect the existing structure in order to make it easy for the project partners to use OP.
How would you do this. Seeking advice and ideas.

Thanks

Hi Mario,

congrats on installing OpenProject :)

Deliverables in OP confuse me, because they always demand a task. I would like to reflect the existing structure in order to make it easy for the project partners to use OP.

Could you provide some details which changes you want to make to the project structure?
Depending on the size of your project and it’s sub-elements, it may make sense to create separate sub-projects for them (you can still display the work packages in the work package list of the parent project).

If you feel that deliverables do not properly fit your need, you can alternatively use other work package types or create your own types (Administration > Types).

Best,
Robin

Well, I used a workaround now.

I disabled the “none” workpackage as it seems that I just cannot add work packages that act as headings.

Basicly I just entered all Deliverables with their deadlines in as “Deliverable” and assigned a person.
Also, I created categories, that reflect the name of the work packages.
Therefore my structure now looks like this:

Project

| Deliverable 1   -> Category A
| Deliverable 2   -> Category B
| Deliverable 3   -> Category B
| Deliverable n   -> Category ...
| Deliverable 27 -> Category H
  • (1 - 2/2)
