Linux and OpenProject NEWB

I am trying to get OpenProject up and running on a virtual machine. I have tried Debian 7.0 and CentOS 6.3. Keep in mind…I am NO linux expert.

Please advise…what is the best distro to begin with (clean)?
What are the db settings referred to in 2.2 on this page? I think this is where everything goes bonkers…
