Best Approach to Migrate Data from 3.14 instance to a new 4 instance
Added by R J about 10 years ago
We are currently running an Ubuntu 12.0.4 production server with version 3.14
Our plan is to have a new Production server with Ubuntu 14.0.4 and the latest project 4.x software.
Question
If I perform a clean 4.0 install on the new server what is the best way to migrate the data (db & files) to the new server from the old server.

Hi R J,
it depends on how you setup the new server.
You have 2 options first and recommended installation through Ubuntu Package or Manual Installation

Ratzi,
Thanks for the quick response.
1. If I take the Ubuntu Package option, does it mean that this server must be a dedicated OpenProject Server only?
a.) Can I run other applications on the same server after the initial setup of OpenProject?
2. My current set up is on the generic Ruby / MySQL server with openproject 3.14, What should I do to migrate the data to the new server and still maintain db and file integrity (i.e links to files with a workpackage are maintained)
Hi again,
this doesn’t mean that this server must be used as a dedicated OpenProject Server only you can run other applications on the same server. The package just creates a apache virtual host and will connect to an existing MySQL server or will install a MySQL server on the server according to your needs.
I need some more information to give you a suitable answer.
I assume you go with the Ubuntu Package.
Will you use an existing MySQL server?
Do you store the (work package) attachments on an NFS share or local on the server?

Yes I will use the Ubuntu Package.
I have my ver3.14 mysql data, should I move it to the new production server before I start installing the OP version 4?
We use the local server on the old production box.
