Background jobs not working
Added by Tedris Threed about 2 years ago
Hi,
we run OpenProject (Ver. 12.0.7) on a NAS with Docker.
I noticed that exporting my gantts as a pdf (or anything else aswell) was not working, as described in this bug report https://community.openproject.org/projects/openproject/work_packages/36744/activity
I wanted to update to a newer version and wanted to make a backup before that.
When i try to backup, the same exact message as when trying to export is showing [missing "en.js.job_status.generic_messages.undefined" translation]
I have the feeling that something in my configuration isnt correct (relatively fresh install, and i am completely new to this).
Would it be possible that i need to activate background jobs somehow? If so, how would i do that with my installation (Open Project via Docker on NAS)?
Thanks in advance!

Hi, please share your OS type and Version on the mentioned NAS, OpenProject currently support only Debian based, RedHat based and SuSe based OS.
Why do you try to install 12.0.7? Do you use Univention? Please get in touch with Univention Support in that case.
I got a Synology DS1817+ with DSM 6.2-23739 installed. On that NAS Docker is running on version 20.10.3-0554. I got the 12.0.7 installed because i initially installed it last year if i remember correctly and just started actually using open project few weeks ago. I wanted to upgrade to a newer open project version, but wanted to backup my data prior to that (see OP). I cannot answer to you what Synology basing their OS on.
according to our docs it is supported:
https://www.openproject.org/docs/installation-and-operations/installation/synology/
The Background jobs are a DSM feature and not an OpenProject feature.
maybe you could ask Synology? What did they say?
Please use the bug report for further communication as you already found out that it is similar.
Thank you
I tried to restart the container and now all my data seems to be gone...
I mounted pgdata and assets correctly when i installed the container, and i made a backup yesterday of those folders can you please help me how to restore my data?
Please share something like terminal output together with the words and how you tried to restore the data until now
I understand you made a backup of the SQL database like in the following link's Docker part
https://www.openproject.org/docs/installation-and-operations/operation/backing-up/#docker-based-installation
at the moment I can just share the docs for restoring Docker installations, of course you are able to find them yourself, too :)
https://www.openproject.org/docs/installation-and-operations/operation/restoring/#docker-based-installation
I backed up the mounted folders, as i wrote in my previous post.
https://www.openproject.org/docs/installation-and-operations/installation/synology/#updates
I followed these steps for updating, but nothing worked as expected.
I only got my folders backed up, isnt this enough? So my data is lost? There was nothing mentioned about backing up a database or something like that.
Or is there at least a way i can reconstruct the tasks out of the data in those folders? i wouldnt mind setting up a fresh and up to date OpenProject and reconstruct my 2 projects i have so far with that.
I think the Synlology docs are not really updated. If you look around in the System Admin Docs, you will see how you do a Backup in 2022 in OpenProject from the GUI: https://www.openproject.org/docs/system-admin-guide/backup/
if you backed up the mounted folders, please could you check if the folders have content? or are they empty?
Best to share something like
find pgdata
andfind assets
if you are in the directory where the folders are located.Basically you must think in docker terminology and use the docker instructions for mounting volumes, did you read these docs?
https://www.openproject.org/docs/installation-and-operations/installation/synology/#faq
https://www.openproject.org/docs/installation-and-operations/operation/upgrading/#compose-based-installation
https://www.openproject.org/docs/installation-and-operations/installation/docker/
with these you are able to understand a little bit how the docker image is used and on Synology it might work similar, but i cannot test that as I do not have a Synology with enough power to run OpenProject
For backing up please see my first post. I tried backing up from Admin Menu but kept getting the same error message...
I mounted the folders pgdata and find assets correctly when i installed it. They seem to be 70mb in size, dunno if that is normal or not.
I give up with this thing, so much work and effort for nothing.
https://www.openproject.org/docs/installation-and-operations/installation/synology/#updates
Should be updated aswell, since it clearly doesnt work like that!
The official support told me to go to the forums or buy enterprise and that they simply dont care about community version or NAS and even wont help me with my issue if i pay for the support only.
Time to move onto something decent i guess.
Hi Tedris
This is another error that you reported in the forum instead of the Bug tracker, let me share you the link for the Bug tracker here, too. We would need your help in order to get this Bug reported.
https://community.openproject.org/projects/openproject/work_packages/create_new?type=1
If you report a Bug you will get better support by the developers than here in the Forum
If you like to update Documentation for Synology, this is also something that can be done by Community members like you:
https://www.openproject.org/docs/development/contribution-documentation/documentation-process/
I am also from the official Support and I recommend you to work directly with the developers in the Bug tracker, as the Forum needs people who also use Synology and it seems I was the only answering until today and you are the only Synology user in this thread unluckily...
Kind regards and I hope once the Synology has a wider user base so the software on Synology gets a higher attention.
Initially i went to the bugtracker with this, then you yourself told me to go to the forums with that.
https://community.openproject.org/work_packages/44719/activity
I rolled back to 12.0.7 now, have to manually bring all the data from my memory back in though.. Export still not working. Same error message.
Hi Tedris Threed, I am not involved with the whole Docker + Synology topic. However, the error
[missing "en.js.job_status.generic_messages.undefined" translation]
looks to me like a missing translation bug. I would try to update openproject to a higher version number, as we usually fix these kind of errors in subsequent release. Also, you said you would not mind to set OpenProject up from scratch. Have you tried doing that with an up to date OpenProject version?Regards,
Wieland
Oh, just saw https://community.openproject.org/topics/15798?r=15805#message-15805. So you are arleady trying a fresh installation.
Hi Wieland,
yes as i wrote here https://community.openproject.org/topics/15798
The container just keeps restarting when i setup the latest release.
Since backing up did not work properly (as stated above) im really hesitant now to try another upgrade again...

My very first post here was https://community.openproject.org/work_packages/36744/activity btw.
This issue is not something new.
Hi Tedris,
one thing came to my mind:
i think i never asked how much memory your DS1817+ has...
could you please help us with that?
https://www.openproject.org/docs/installation-and-operations/system-requirements/
Minimum Hardware Requirements
CPU: Quad Core CPU (>= 2ghz)
Your Synology is compatible Quad-core 2.4GHz CPU
Memory: 4096 MB
This is the question here. It would explain why the container does not spin up on a System with less than 4 GB, maybe this is also outdated and we need to put 8 GB here. So please just tell us how much memory your NAS has, thank you.
Free disk space: 20 GB
Your Synology is most likely compatible, how much space is dedicated to the drive where the docker container(s) are located? enough free space on that mount point?
Kind regards, Adam
Hi Adam,
We got 16GB of RAM in our DS1817+. Free Diskspace is 7.1TB.
The currently running container uses 1.8GB of RAM.
I think we can check that one off :)
Hi Tedris, definitely that is okay for OP. Thank you for clarifcation
