Installation on Servers such as Dreamhost.com

Added by Franz Kainz over 9 years ago

This looks like a great tool, I just wished, I knew how I could install it…

So it would be great if you could give me any advice. I have a subscription at Dreamhost.com, but when I tried to install it, I did not have the permission rights. Any advice, which service provider would be appropriate for installing openproject, so that the tool can be used not just on a local domain?

Thanks, Franz

Franz,

You don’t necessarily have to work with a hosting service. I host it myself on 10-year-old laptop with no battery and broken keyboard. You just need access to your router.

  1. Log on to your router (do a search to figure out what address you need. Try 192.168.0.1, 192.168.1.1., or “routerlogin.com”).
  2. Figure out the local IP address (192.168.., etc.) for the computer running OpenProject.
  3. Set up port forwarding, either *.80 for standard http, or whatever if you want to run on a different port (might be good to avoid hackxorz). Let say you decide on 5555.
  4. Figure out your real IP address (web search “what’s my ip” or something similar). Let’s say it’s 123.45.67.890
  5. From any web browser, in the address bar type your ip, a colon, and then then the port. So based on the above, type in 123.45.67.890:5555.

That’ll take you there. It’s what I do myself.

EDIT I see you’re already with a host. In that case, set up ssh access through the web portal, or demand it if you can’t figure it out (ok…ask nicely). Then follow the instructions listed elsewhere

Thanks for your help and feedback, much appreciated!

Maaaaan, it sure would be awesome if OpenProject could be set up on Dreamhost as one of their “One-Click installs.”

It uses too many resources for Dreamhost. They will kill the process. I tried. I rent a cheap vps. OVH has vps’s for $3 a month.
