OpenProject 3.0 has been released with major improvements compared to the prior version 2.4.
OpenProject 3.0 has been released. Now, after months of migration, re-factoring, feature development, testing, bug fixing,… we are proud to release the new stable version OpenProject 3.0.
It is a major improvement compared to the prior version OpenProject 2.4 with new Rails and Ruby versions, plugin generator, with new features and other improvements, such as for accessibility or design.
What’s new in OP 3.0?
Ruby on Rails version
The Ruby as well as the Rails versions of OpenProject were updated to ensure security, performance as well as support: OpenProject has been updated to Ruby 2.1. The underlying Rails version has been upgraded to Rails 3.2.
Usability and Design
The user interface has been improved with new colours, fonts as well as improvements in usability: The new design improves the structure and layout of OpenProject and - through the use of icon fonts - also improves performance, scalability and multi-browser compatibility.
Accessibility
Major aspects with regard to accessibility have already been considered for OpenProject 2.4. Now, with 3.0 we set the goals even higher. We eliminated remaining barriers within the software, e.g. through an improved screen reader support, and have been coached with regard to accessibility of future design and developments of the software.
Keyboard Shortcuts for Power Users
Advanced users who want to work more efficiently with OpenProject can use keyboard shortcuts to navigate through OpenProject. Many functions can be accessed by shortcuts, ranging from the creation of work packages to accessing the global search.
Adaptive Timeline Reports
Timeline reports in OpenProject 3.0 offer an array of new functions. Through the unification of issues and planning elements to work packages, (former) issues can now be displayed in timeline reports. In addition, custom fields are supported, filters for project attributes have been added, planning comparisons have been improved and many additional improvements have been implemented.
Improved Work Package Functionality
Work packages (former issues) now support auto-completion, helping users to save time as well as find and reference the right work packages. In addition, the work package summary as well as the context menu have been extended to display the responsibility.
Add Work Package Queries as Menu Items to Sidebar
While finding the most important work package queries could be a hassle in OpenProject 2.4, OpenProject 3.0 gives users the ability to add frequently used queries as menu items to the sidebar. Thereby, project members can see the most important queries right away.
Copy Projects based on Templates
OpenProject 3.0 provides an easy way to create new projects based on existing projects. Project managers can select which attributes should be copied from the existing project, providing them with a maximum of flexibility.
Improved Project Settings
The project settings in OpenProject 3.0 bring a new and improved member configuration. In addition, the type activation now covers work package types - therefore including former issue trackers.
Additional Account Security Features
Security is a crucial aspect for any application. OpenProject 3.0 includes many new features to increase account security, ranging from assigning random passwords and password complexity enforcements to password expiration, all of which can be configured to individual needs.
