Work Package relations with Precedes / Follows - Using Hours instead of Days
Added by João Cardoso about 6 years ago
Hi everyone. New OpenProject user here.
We are starting to test OpenProject on our team and we see a lot of potential. But as any new implementation we have a few questions that we cant find answers on the documentation.
Context: We have a set of tasks to be performed, that depends on other tasks. because each task must be done in order, and we decided to user the Precedes and Follows type of relations to ensure that.
Our problem: it seems that doing so, we cant have 2 tasks on the same day. The schedule is updated automatically for the next day when we add a new relation. Some tasks take 1 hour or half a day and we want to have the possibility to use the relations functionality where more than one task is to be done on a single day and show that on the Gantt. It does not seem to be possible.
Is there any workaround?
Thank you in advance
best regards,
João Cardoso

Hi João,
welcome to the OpenProject community!
The follows / precedes relationship does indeed always schedule tasks at least one day apart. If you have tasks which should be completed on the same day, we recommend to create a parent task for the entire day (or a longer time period) and to create sub elements / child work packages which can be scheduled on the same day.
This way the tasks can be on the same day and you still see that they have a relation to the parent element. As long as you create the sub work packages in the right order, the will be displayed accordingly in the work package list and Gantt chart.
The fastest way to create child work packages is to right-click on a parent work package and to select "Create new child" from the dropdown menu.

Robin
Hi Robin
Thanks for the answer.
I see what you mean and tried that. Still when I want to make a Milestone dependent of a work package it always sets the milestone to the day after. My goal was to update the date of the milestone to the exact same end date as the work package associated with it because we have a task that is done on the same day as the milestone. And if that task needs to be postponed, I need to ensure that the milestone is updated also.
Not a big deal, Ill just have to make sure to keep the milestone updated in case of a change.
Another quick question is to know if there is any plans to change the order of the work packages on the "all open" view or other view? Sometimes when we are adding tasks it would be great to order them visually using perhaps a drag and drop feature. This is specially important when we dont have yet dates set. If we have dates set, its easy to sort by start and finish date, but if we dont have those there seems to be no easy way to change the order.
Thanks
Hi João,
drag & drop would be very useful in the work package list. I agree.
There is a feature request for this: .
We are currently still looking for a sponsor for this feature. This will then be one of the highest priority features to implement.
Best,
Robin
