Timelines and use of start/due dates and estimated time

Added by John Parker over 8 years ago

Hi all

I’ve been playing with the timelines feature and like it immensely.

The thing I’m having trouble with is the correct use of the start date, due date, and estimated time.

To explain further, I’ve created some tasks that are linked by having “precedes” and “follows” relations.

If I set the start date of the first task, and estimated times for each task, I expected the due date of the first task to be filled in and the start/due dates of subsequent tasks to be filled in.

This is not happenening.

Is this because it is work in progress?

Do I have to use the MS Project sync to achieve this?

Thanks in advance

John

Hi John,

Is this because it is work in progress?

Yes, we are working heavily on this. So currently you should not use the work package relations for scheduling purposes. This is on the roadmap. Before we start this we want to focus on the enhanced GUI based on AngularJS. This allows us to implement a lot of nice features such as inlineediting, drag and drop, inline create etc.

So currently I recommend using the MS Project Add-in for the scheduling. However, it is the goal that you do not need proprietary software or desktop application for scheduling.

Niels

Hi Niels

OK, much as I thought. I’ll give the MS Project sync a go….

OK, I’m using the version 2.8.368.0.

It installs fine. I configure the connection fine - tests OK.

I set it for Subscribe mode, subscribe to a small group of work packages, sync and they appear.

Now I make some scheduling changes, link some tasks, hit Sync again and up comes a dialog “Synchronize” with a comparison list.

At this point I am stuck. The only active button is Close. There appear to be tick boxes on the left hand side they do nothing when clicked.

I guess it is waiting for me to do something before enabling the Sync button.

Any ideas?

Hi John,

can you please hover over the tick boxes. There should be a tooltip with some more information.

Niels

Hi Niels

I hadn’t spotted that.

Got further - much further.

Many thanks

Hi again

Am I right in thinking the Task Connector does not like to have a parent task with some children in different projects?

I get a conflict in the sync window but all is OK if all the children are in the same project as the parent.

We have a hierarchy of projects and it would be difficult to work with this constraint.

Hi!

I'm looking for the same feature and, in 4 years, I might guess that the feature should have arrived at some point in the roadmap.

So.... Any news?

BR,

Giorgio
