How can I check planned project cost?

Added by Nima Kamkar about 11 years ago

Hello all

How can I check planned project cost? Imagine, I have setup all the work packages with estimated time and assigned them to users. Users have their rate setup. I would like to know how much the project is estimated to cost? I would like to see this at any time (before anyone has begun the project and logged any time as well as during the project).

In the videos shown on the website, there is a reporting menu, but I do not have it in mine or is not visible in OP3 maybe? All I see in the left menu that could be releavnt is something called “Status reportings”. When I go there, it is empty, when I click on “New reporting” I get a message saying “There are no projects to which a reporting association can be created.”

I am totally confused.

Any help would be appreciated.

Best wishes
Nima

Hi Nima,

How can I check planned project cost? Imagine, I have setup all the work packages with estimated time and assigned them to users. Users have their rate setup. I would like to know how much the project is estimated to cost? I would like to see this at any time (before anyone has begun the project and logged any time as well as during the project).

Currently you can only use the package table to sum the estimated time.

This feature is for project status reporting, e.g. traffic light reporting. You use it to get an aggregated status view of several project using the the timelines module. This module does not help you with the cost planning. Next week we will release the Cost reporting plugin:

With this plugin you can filter aggregate booked costs (labour costs and unit costs). However, it is not connected to the planned costs data.

Does this answer help you?

Niels

Thank you very much Niels

The work around you suggested will be fine for now until the plugin comes out. However, a few notes:

  1. I still do not understand what “Status reporting” menu is all about
  2. At the very end of your reply, about the plugin, you say, “However, it is not connected to the planned costs data”. I didn’t understand what you mean by this

Finally, are there full documentations anywhere? I have not fully understood how to setup “Cost types” and a a couple of other things?

Best wishes

One other thing Niel

From which version have you taken the screenshot you have included here? I definitely do not see your screen. For starters, when I click on work packages, I only get “New work package” and “Summary” under it. Also, I do not see where you are choosing columns, etc.. I have attached what mine looks like. Can you elaborate please?

Best wishes

Hi Nima,

I still do not understand what “Status reporting” menu is all about1

This feature is not fully implemented yet. This makes it quite hard do understand. Basically you can create status relationship between project, e.g.

  • Project A reports status “green” to Project D
  • Project B reports status “amber” to Project D
  • Project C reports status “red” to Project D
  • Project A reports status “red” to Project F

These status reportings allow two things:

  1. In Project D you can create a timeline report that entails work packages from Project A, B and C.
  2. In Project D you can create a timeline report that shows only projects with a specific status, e.g. only red projects.

In the future this feature might be changed in that way that a project can have only one status. So a status is a direct attribute of a project. This is less flexible but easier to understand. Also we want to extend the view to get a status dashboard.

This is OpenProject version 3.0. It is above the work packages table. You might need to expand the section “Options”.

Niels
