OpenProject installation very slow performance

Hi to everyone,
we have some issue with our installation. Generally we work with acceptable performance but sometimes it freeze, and saving a work package takes 4 minute.
It seems like system is waiting for some response but it doesn’t arrive…
The installation was made by ionas, so I think that settings are ok, I’ve only made some update with apt.

I’ve not any experience on programming, and I don’t know Ruby, I’ve little experience on linux, where can I start to check? what can check?

Hello Stefano,

do you use the latest OpenProject version (7.3)?
You can check this in “Administration” > “Information” > “Core Version”.

Which pages are slow (aside from creating / saving work packages)?
Do these pages have something in common (e.g. using a lot of custom fields)?
Is this browser-specific (e.g. is the performance in Chrome, Firefox, Edge the same)?

Can you share how many users your OpenProject environment has and how many users are using it at the same time (approximately)?

Can you share some information regarding your server (memory etc.)?

Hello Robin,
thanks for fast support…
Server is a ubuntu 16.04 VM with 4 core and 4Gb of ram, usually max ram load is 980mb, and max per processor 15%.
We are 30 user max in same time 5/7 but I think it’s very difficult…
User report me that the page involved is wok packages, but tomorrow I ask to investigate.
We use 4 custom field.
When it’s happened user tell me that they have tried with Chrome and Edge but with the same results.
The only time that has happened to me, I try to authenticate but the system doesn’t respond, and in htop there’s no anomaly.

Tell me if you like to have some test response, tell what to do and I’ll report the results…

Hello Stefano,

thank you for sending the information.
It would be good to know if only the work package page is affected since this would limit / narrow down the possible reasons.
Also, it would be helpful to know if only certain parts of the page are affected (e.g. queries, create form).

Hi Robin,
my fault, I ask to users, they report that the anomaly wasn’t only on work packages, but it’s general: when it happens searching project, populate a combo custom field, loading a work packages, saving a work packages, it takes from 2 to 4 minutes.
Usually users use Chrome, but we have tested also with Edge.
Can be a problem with MySQL?

Hi Stefano,

hm, that sounds more like a setup / hardware problem rather than a bug / issue within OpenProject.
It’s probably best if you reach out to Ionas - since they performed the installation they can probably evaluate best what the error is.
