Feature request: use the same email address for more than one users
Added by Claudio Fischer almost 8 years ago
for testing purposes and also for external users e. g. suppliers I want to create a account in openproject and use my own email address for these users.
But if I try to use my email address for more than one user I get the error message “Email has already been taken.”
Is it possible to use the same email address for more than one user?

Hi Claudio,
the trick is to add a suffix such as:
claudio.fischer+user1@gmail.org

sorry, cant get this to work. Can you provide some details?
1) I created a user “testuser”.
2) gave the “testuser” a second email address of mine to verify email is working
=> got mail at changing task for testuser, so mail is working.
3) now where and how do I have to use the suffix? Is the suffix the name of the user?
I tried claudio.fischer+testuser@“mymail.com” => this didnt work
Hi Claudio,
you can do this:
Here is an example (let’s say your actual email is claudio.fischer@test.com):
User 1 (actual account):
User name: Claudio
Email: claudio.fischer@test.com
User 2 (test user):
User name: Supplier1
Email: claudio.fischer+test1@test.com
User 3 (test user)
User name: Supplier2
Email: claudio.fischer+test2@test.com
etc.
The key is that OpenProject accepts these suffixes as being different from your email address (in the example claudio.fischer@test.com) but your email provider ignores these and still sends emails to e.g. claudio.fischer+test1@test.com to claudio.fischer@test.com.
Best,
Robin
thanks Robin,
your explanation just describes what I have already tested.
The feature using the plus sign in email addresses is called sub-addressing or plus-addressing.
Would have helped if these words were used ;-)
But in my local installation of OpenProject this approach is still not working.
And guess why? Our IT is using a Microsoft exchange server.
And exchange server does not support this feature :-(
