Can not assign groups to tasks
Added by Yadin Flammer over 8 years ago
Despite putting users in groups and groups in projects, you can not apparently set a group as an assignee on a task (work package). This is an issue and a severe limitation. There are cases when no one person needs to be assigned, it’s a group task. There needs to be a way to do this, and expectation would be that with a group listed in the project members this would be possible.
On a side note, the “Responsible” field doesn’t make sense. How is this different than “Asignee”?

Hi Yadin,
make sure the option “Allow assignment to groups” is activated in the admin settings.
Go to “Administration” (click on your user name in the upper right corner and select “Administration” from the dropdown menu).
Then select “System settings” in the left side menu and choose the tab “Work package tracking”.
There you can select the checkbox “Allow assignment to groups”.
The “Responsible” is an additional field to separate who is accountable for the completion of a work package as opposed to who is actually doing the work.
Best,
Robin
Awesome, thanks!
Now that I know where that option is I can find it in the documentation. Perhaps cross reference to this can be added to https://www.openproject.org/help/user-guides/work-packages/create-new-work-package/ so that it’s clear why the option that is indicated is missing. Also, some clarification to the wording for Assignee and Responsible may be helpful :)
Also, it unfortunately seems that this option doesn’t work. While Groups now show up to be assignee, they don’t take. No matter how many times I set it and it says it updated successfully, the assignee is still the person it was before and not the group.
Seems to be an edit issue. A new item CAN have a group assigned, but you can’t change an existing one from a person to a group. Further, while it will show the group in the Work Packages list, it will NOT show it on the timeline list. In the Assignee column on the timeline groups won’t display, only people.
