Ability to change date range of parent work package
Added by Yadin Flammer over 8 years ago
I see that once you make a work package a parent, you can no longer set its date range, that is locked down to being whatever dates the children cover. This is both expected and limiting. I would advocate for an override option where you can set a custom date if desired. The idea here is that a phase may be set for a period of time, but all the work under it may not be perfectly defined yet. Right now I would have to make a child item that spans the time as a placeholder to actually get the parent to show properly on the timeline. That seems somewhat less elegant that an override checkbox I could activate to define the custom range outside the children.

I totally agree. There should be two different modes:
How would you integrate this into the UI? Any ideas how a user can trigger edit the mode?
I think the most elegant would be to just leave the edit button like you normally have for date, but in this case the popup calendar has an extra button that simply says Automatic. In which case if you click that, it pulls the dates of the children as it does now. Otherwise it uses the dates you pick.
If that’s not possible, then when you edit a package and choose “show all attributes” there would be a checkbox/drop choice item just above Date for Date Type that was Manual or Custom if a checkbox, or Manual and Automatic if a drop down. That choice would then activate or deactivate the edit button for Date. Seems clunky, but there may be code limitations on the elegant option I mentioned first.
Still nothing has changed. It is quite limiting.
