since a lot of users prefer to only see the work package list information, the split screen is currently not activated by default (also there is a performance difference when loading the details view by default).
However, with OpenProject 5.0 (which is scheduled to be released at the end of the week #18432) there is a much more convenient way to activate the details view: You can simply click on a row in the work package list and the details view for the respective work package is shown.
Feel free to open a feature request in the Wish list if you prefer a different behavior.
