How openproject authentication work using password verification?

Hello Geeks,
I’m PHP developer so unable to find out Ruby script process use in openproject. I am thing of using openproject authentication using username & password for custom build API access instead of openproject API which use API Key.

I would like to know the password verification process use in openproject authentication, so that I can implement the same in custom PHP API for authenticating user.
