Changing dates combined with dependent workpages
Added by QI Employee about 9 years ago
Currently we’re testing Openprojects in our organisation. We have recurring tasks, which consists of several components. I created a template project with serveral workpackages underneath, for example:
Installation hardware Project X
ship hardware to customer
Plan service engineer
Connect hardware on-site
Power-on system and runs checks
etc
These workplaces are dependent on each other (follow up x days)
When I want to change the starting date of this project anc move it ahead in time, I modify the date of the first workpackage and all other packages are correctly modified as well. For example the project is delayed 7 days.
But when I need to move a project back in time, and I change the date 7 days back in time, then the underlying packages do not move along and are not modified. The result is that there enddates don’t match anymore.
Is there a reason for this? Am I doing something wrong?
Would you suggest another approach to move a bunch of work packages ahead or back in time, simultaneously?

Hello,
thanks for you question.
Actually, this behavior is currently by design:
When a deliverable (such as a phase or a milestone) is delayed, the work packages following this deliverable need to be pushed in the future as well.
However, the reverse is not necessarily true since finishing a deliverable earlier may not necessarily mean that the work packages following this deliverable should be completed earlier as well.
Arguably, this can however be solved by using a buffer time.
There is actually a feature request for the behavior you describe:
Feel free to check whether this feature request matches your requirements.
