Timeline/Gantt chart to show all projects?
Added by Michael Rockfire over 10 years ago
Hi all,
I’m new to OpenProject, and I’m wondering if it is possible with a plugin or so to show all the projects in one timeline? I’m kind of looking for resource allocation tool also, and I’m not sure if this is the right place for that. For project management this seems to be way more stable and polished than DotProject for example, but I’m missing the possibility to show timelines by staff members and the one view to show and filter different types of projects.
Did it make any sense?
I guess I could go and make a one big project, and create tens of sub projects for it. Then I would be able to show their timelines in one view?
My usecase basically is something like this:
- Tens of short projects per year (maybe 3-7 weeks in length)
- Staff is allocated to these projects based on their availability
= need to see staff availability + overall view to all projects and their phases.
Thanks for any comments !

Hi Mikko,
currently OpenProject does not support resource management. This is an important feature that is on our Roadmap for next year.
Yes, you can create timeline reports that show work packages from different projects. You need to create a reporting relationship between both projects. So if you want that the work packages from Project A show up in Project B you need to create a status report from project A to project B.

Niels
Thanks,
That’s good to know. I think it will be a valuable addition to OpenProject.

Yes, I also need reporting of staff availability for all project.
Hopefully there is a new plugin to provide that, thanks to Neils for the info that resource management is on OpenProject Roadmap for this year. Because is very important feature.
it’s has been a month I’ve managed to install and try openproject [[http://pm.telkomuniversity.ac.id]], overall this application provide what my company expect, staying added resource management features, then openproject is the perfect application.

Hallo,
I’m also very interested in this software, but a resource management feature is necessary fot our needs.
Niels wrote that this feature is in the Roadmap, but I can’t find it there.
Can anyone tell me when to expect this feature?
Regards,
Goschi
Hello Goschi,
the resource management feature is currently not planned for the near future.
The focus lies first on improving existing functionality and making it more user-friendly.
At the moment we work on improving the work package functionality: OpenProject 4.1 will allow users to change work package attributes on the details pane via inplace editing. Afterwards, a new work package full screen is planned.
However, as soon as there are news regarding resource planning, it will be announced on the OpenProject blog.

Robin
Hi
I am using version 3.0.14 for six months. OpenProject is very helpful.
I am trying to create timelines that show work packages of project and work packages of it´s subprojects. I am not able to do it.
Kindly explain how to do it with detailed steps, as Mr. Neils explains previously that it is required to create a report relationship between projects.
Thank you
Antonio
Hello Antonio,
sub-projects can be displayed in main projects by creating a reporting relationship from the sub-project to the parent project.
To do this, go to the sub-project, select “Status reporting” and create a reporting relationship to the parent project.
If you then create a timeline report in the main project, the sub-projects are displayed as well (unless they are filtered out).
You may also want to take a look at the OpenProject user guide.
There is also an OpenProject Youtube channel. However, some of the videos are unfortunately outdated.
Hope this helps.
Best regards,
Robin
Thank you very much Robin, it works perfect !! Now I am able to see sub-projects within timeline charts.
Best regards,
Antonio

By the way, if someone reads this one, the menu option “Status Reportings” is shown at the left menu. See the attached image.
