Using Excel to look at Openproject data

Added by Henry Fogwill over 10 years ago

I would like to share something I find very useful with Openproject.

We run Openproject on Ubuntu and we installed an ODBC driver on this server to connect to the Openproject tables.

In Windows I created a new DSN called Openproject and pointed this to my Production Openproject ODBC driver. I ensured to set this connection READ ONLY out of fear of destroying everything in Openproject with a bad update out of Excel.

With this connection I can pull all Openproject data into Excel and start looking at project data in very interesting ways.

Examples would be:

  • I have a sheet with a line item for each members in the project. Based on a feils on the sheet I can select a Sprint and see remaining hours for all members.
  • We have many Project with members of teams working in multiple projects. From a single screen I can see based on a member filter all the work in all projects a member is working on and all the hours outstanding for this specific member.
  • Based on column filters I can see assigned tasks and hours for a member (or group of members) for 1:n sprints and sum hours to estimate timelines.

Overall we are pleased with how this works and believe we are just scratcing the surface on how this data can be used in Excel.
