[Solved] Can I have different Work Packages Statuses for different projects

Added by Rajesh R Nair over 8 years ago

Hello,

Can I have different Work Packages Statuses for different projects? I would like to know whether there is a way I can associate certain work package status with only some of the projects ?

For example if I have the following work packages statuses
New, In Progress, In Development, In Functional Review, Testing, Closed

How can I have one project with only work packages move through
New, In Progress, In Development,Testing, Closed (Functional Review step should not be available)

For another project, New, In Progress, In Development,In Functional Review, Closed (Testing steps should not be there and In Functional Review should be there.

Regards
Rajesh

Hi Rajesh,

work package statuses always depend on the (work package) type and the role of the user using that type.
You cannot directly activate or deactivate certain statuses in some projects.
But there are two different approaches you can take:

  1. You may use different work package types in the projects (and define different workflows for those types). You can then decide which types should be activated in which project. This also has the advantage that you can easily offer the same work package statuses in several similar projects just by activating the type in those projects.
  2. You can make adjustments to the available statuses based on the user’s role in a project. If you want to use the same type in different projects but with different statuses, you can assign the users different roles in those projects.

Best,
Robin

Thank a lot Robin for that clarification.

So basically, if I have a type as “Bug” and then I can have a certain way of workpackage status transitions defined for Project Manager, Project Lead etc. When this “bug” work package is created in different projects, it will follow the same transition based on the role of the user.

(Hope I understood you first point correctly here.)

And in the second point, if type “Bug” itself needs to have different treatment in different projects, we need to create different roles (since I cannot have two types with “Bug” as name.). So the recommended way is to define Bug with all possible workpackage statuses.

Then create a project role like Project Manager-Generic (which follows a workflow 1) => this will be assigned to Project 1
Create another role like Project Manager-ABC Project (which follows a workflow 2) => this will be assigned to Project 2

Rajesh

Hi Rajesh,

yes, precisely.

As long as the work package type is activated in a project (which can e.g. be done in the project settings (in the tab “Types”)), the available workflow for a given role is the same as for other projects in which the specific type is activated as well.

There is the option to define different workflows if the user is the author or assignee of a work package (such as a bug), however this is also project-independent.

You may also have a look at the following thread for some more information regarding workflows:

Best,
Robin
