Permission to manage/edit only own tasks and printing of gantt chart

Added by Kk B over 7 years ago

I am using openproject community edition where I find the following features missing:

1) Allowing a user to edit/manage only those work packages or tasks which he/she is assignee or responsible person.(Currently giving ‘edit workpackage’ permission allows editing any other tasks )
2) Export gantt chart as pdf or any other format for printing(Currently we are using printscr to manage things.)

I wish to know if these features are available in the professional version or am i doing anything wrong and they already exist in community edition. Please enlighten me.

Thank you.

Hello Kk,

  1. Only editing work packages that you are assigned to is currently not possible (neither in the Community nor the Enterprise Edition). However, you can configure workflows and allow additional workflow transitions if a user is assigned to a work package. (You can configure this in the administration: https://www.openproject.org/help/administration-2/manage-workflows/).
  2. We optimized the browser print-out format for the Gantt chart (in Chrome). Use Google Chrome as a browser, go to the work package page, activate the Gantt chart and use the browser print function to export the Gantt chart as a PDF or print it out directly. The work package table on the left side is hidden automatically so there is more space for the Gantt chart.

If you want to learn which features are available in the Enterprise Edition, feel free to take a look at https://www.openproject.org/enterprise-edition/#premium-features.

Best regards,
Robin

Tell me, please, have you thought about implementing this feature? This would be useful in large projects with a large number of participants.

Hello Serg,

that forum thread has aged quite a bit. Since the second topic (Gantt export) has been realized in the meantime, I presume you refer to the need of an option for an "edit only if assignee" - permission.

That is in fact not implented in such a way. Permissons in OpenProject are based on the role one holds in a project. That role is applied for all work packages in that certain project.

However, there is a fitting feature request in place:

I added a vote on your behalf there.

At the same time, a way to grant edit rights only for certain work packages could be realized trough the work package sharing. That allows you to share only certain work packages of a project with another OpenProject user. You can select whether that user can view, edit or comment on the shared work packages. You would need to share a lot of work packages in a larger project to establish this as a workflow but it could be worth a look at least. [1]

Best,
Alexander
