Morning Alex,
Can you please advise the correlation between task defined on the boards and backlog management in a defined project.
Created a a basic boat with few tasks. The defined tasks on the boards are not allocated to the sprint. By default shouldn't the task be part of the backlog, one can then create more user stories, task in the backlog and assign them to subsequent sprints.
None of the user stories ,task are automatically part of backlog, it seems like one has to create new user stories and task to the sprints.if this is the case then task on the boards are orphaned ie. not assigned to any sprints.
I have read available documentations and still not clear how Backlog functionality works. Can you please elaborate.
Thanks for your help and consideration
regards
Abhi

Hi Abhi,
the backlogs module in a project needs versions to be used. You first need to create version in order to add tables (left and right side) to the backlogs module.
If you then create e.g. a user story in the backlog module, this user story will automatically be assigned to the version tied to the table in the backlog module.
A task will only appear in the task board (table on the left side) within the backlogs module.
Example:
"Backlog" and "Sprint - Release 1.0" are both versions.
If you create user story work packages via the work package table instead and assign them to a version, they will also be visible in the backlog module.
So the backlog module basically displays work packages assigned to a certain version and then adds further functionalities.
You can define wich work package type should be handled as a "Task" in the backlogs module and which are "user stories". More on this here -> [1]
The boards module is quite similar. It also displays work packages that match certain criteria. There are different types of boards though:
basic board
action boards
The basic board is part of the free community version of OpenProject. Actions boards can be used with the Enterprise version.
Action boards always perform an action when you move the cards between columns. Basic boards do not auto-perform additional actions but allow you to edit the columns freely.
If you work with an action board type = version, then each column displays the work packages assigned to a version. You can e.g. use such a board to display a backlog and sprints. Similar to the backlogs module.
Example of an action board (type = version) with the versions mentioned above:
Same project. Same work packages. Just a different module (boards instead of backlog). Both rely on the usage of versions though.
I hope that provides a short overview of the difference between these two modules and what versions do in this context.
Best,
Alexander
