General chat function

We as a team are missing a lightweight project-wide chat function, a bit like a Teams Channel, where people can discuss general issues concerning the whole project, not buried in individual work packages. We love the ability to comment on work packages, but some discussions concern the project as a whole. The forum module is very heavyweight and does not allow at-mentions. What's the solution?
