is openproject really for me?

Added by Eric Doutreleau over 2 years ago

Hi

I m a manager of a small computer team that manage network and computer infrastructure in a research center.

I have a big excel file to manage tasks of people and it s really a mess.

I was wondering if openproject could help me.
I have understood how to manage project. It seems nice with a lot of possibility.
But i didn't see in the docs a way to manage workload of members.

Theres a gantt for projet but i didn't find a way to have that kind of view for people.

How does users of openproject manage the workload of the teams?

We also have a small computer/IT team... we went with OpenProject not necessarily for "Ganntt" and "Projects" but to create generic "Projects" (representing our Product offerings/software) and assign/manage specific tasks to team members.

The head of the department liked OP so much and we eliminated our in-house timecard/timesheet system and are now using OpenProject for timesheet entries, since we are already using it for tracking the time on the specific task(s).

We did purchase the "Enterprise" edition for access to the "boards", but once we started using OP I think we realized we only really needed the open source version, since "boards" are just another view of "Work Packages". The dis-advantage, IMO, to "Enterprise" is that it restricts the number of "Users", so we cannot let our Sales Team (or Customers) know or see the status of projects.

Thanks for your answer

Well now i m a bit more clear of what i need and seems to lack in openproject.
I need a multi project management ressources.

And i don't see that in openproject.

How do u manage in your team the fact that new urgent project come and is affected to people that are already assigner to other project.

First, you need to be more specific as to what you mean by "multi project management resources".  We configured our system as follows (somewhat aligned to how our bug tracking software is setup):
App1 Project
  • App1 GUI Projects
  • App1 Main Module Projects
       - Task1
       - Task2
  • App1 Archiving Projects
App2 Project
  • App2 GUI Projects
       - Task3
       - Task4
  • App2 Main Module Projects
  • App1 Archiving Projects
       - Task5
       - Task6
WebSite Project
  • Web User Interface Projects
       - Task7
       - Task8
  • Web User Reports Projects
  • Web Security Projects
       - Task9
       - Task10

Regarding how do we manage urgent projects, we create a new task, set it to a higher priority and communicate to the various members about the new task...

Thanks for your asnwer and sorry vfor the delay i was away from my computer.

well my problem is about people who work on the different project.

for example if i have an urgent project and i assign people on it i would like to have a view on how it delayed the other project this people work on.

i have to be sure that a person is not at 200% of their workforce because i have assigned at 100% to two projects.
