Can users update their own tasks?
Added by Mark Challice over 4 years ago
I'm a teacher (and a project manager in a previous life). My students run projects to develop software. I'm thinking about using OpenProject to give me visibility over how each of the students are progressing with their project.
I am absolutely new to OpenProject so I'd appreciate some advice as to what I can expect to achieve.
I'll be using the Community version as we're a school and therefore budgets are constrained.
So. With the Community version, I'd like to set myself up as a project manager then have a separate project for each of my students. Can each student have a user account that will allow them to use a browser to update their progress each week?
Sounds straightforward but I just wanted to check to see if you guys could confirm that I could do this or help by recommending a better approach.
Many thanks.

I am very new to OpenProject, but, from what I can see, here is how I might approach it. First, I do not really see much of a difference between the "Work Packages" in a "Project" vs the "Boards", other than a "Board" gives you a different view.
I would create a specific work package for each student, assign the work package to the student, then have them periodically update the "Log Time" with comments as to their progress?
Each Student could also go into their "My Page" and update their time spend/activity in the "calendar" view?
It would be nice if the "Log Time" comments should show in "Activity" (post I put into this forum a week ago).
Another possibility would be to get a generic project with specific work tasks, i.e.
• Create project outline
• Program microchip / write first chapter of book, etc.
• Create robot sub-assembly / complete first 5 out of 10 (or 1/2) of chapters in book...
then copy and create a project for each student?
and create the specific tasks required to finish the project?
Hopefully that can help with ideas?
