Boards plugin in Community edition?
Added by Armand Niculescu over 5 years ago
Hi, I'm new to OpenProject. I first tried the online demo, which has the really cool Boards feature (Kanban and Task Board).
I installed the Community edition but it doesn't have this feature :(
It it something new in in v9.0? (I see the Community is 8.3.2). If so, what's the ETA for release? Or is there another way to enable this feature?

Hi Armand,
the board view is part of OpenProject 9 which has not been released yet for the self-hosted OpenProject version.
You can get an overview of the scheduled releases at https://community.openproject.com/projects/openproject/work_packages?query_id=918.
Note that the board view is an Enterprise Edition feature (available when OpenProject 9 is released). If you would like to use OpenProject with the self-hosted version and would like to test this feature, you can request a trial license at https://www.openproject.org/enterprise-edition/.
Best regards,
Robin
Hey Robin,
I just installed OpenProject because I'm would love to switch from Asana.
First I tried the hosted version, then I installed the community edition - and was missing the board view there as well. For me it's important that for whenever I need it I can either switch to a usable free plan (like in Asana) or host it myself (which I prefer, that's why I'm considering the switch).
So this thread is 2 years old and the feature has not been included in the community edition. Also I don't find any mention of the board feature in the linked roadmap. Can I safely assume that you're keeping this functionality for your hosted/enterprise version?
Note that the board view is an Enterprise Edition feature (available when OpenProject 9 is released). If you would like to use OpenProject with the self-hosted version and would like to test this feature, you can request a trial license at https://www.openproject.org/enterpriseiMessage Download-edition/.
Hey Matthias,
That's great to hear that you would like to switch from Asana to OpenProject. From a data privacy/security standpoint, that's a great choice.
As Frank mentioned (thank you, Frank), the board view is exclusively available for the Enterprise on-premises version and the Enterprise Cloud version, not for the Community edition.
When Armand opened this thread originally, the Kanban board was already available for the Enterprise Cloud version but not yet released for the Enterprise on-premises version.
The link I posted, referred to the release of OpenProject 9.0. However, in the release, the Kanban board was published as a premium feature (only available for the Enterprise on-premises version). This has not changed (since the Enterprise on-premises version is an important way of funding the future OpenProject development).
However, you can of course install the Community edition and use it free of charge. While it does not include the Kanban board, it includes the majority of OpenProject's features (see this comparison for a detailed comparison of the OpenProject versions).
As Frank mentioned, we offer a free 14-day trial license for the Enterprise on-premises Edition. You can use it to temporarily upgrade your Community Edition to the Enterprise on-premises version. After the 14-day trial period, you automatically switch back to the Community Edition - so there is no risk for you.
You can get a trial license from here: https://www.openproject.org/enterprise-edition/.
Kind regards,
Robin
Hi Robin,
Are such plugins like the Board-Plugin closed source ?
So you are following an ,,open core model'' for Open Project ?
Is it possible to get enterprise support for a pure open source installation (communoty edition) ?

greets Bernd
Hi Bernd,
The Enterprise features (such as the Boards module) are also open-source.
However, these features are only unlocked with the Enterprise license.
Enterprise support is exclusively available with the Enterprise version. The Enterprise Edition automatically includes professional support. You can find more information here: https://www.openproject.org/pricing#support.
Kind regards,
Robin
After a long time of abstinence (used to work with OP back in 2018), I am surprised to see the agile plugin, which used to be part of the community edition (ref. https://blog.saasweb.net/2017/07/openproject-schnellanleitung-teil-2/), now seems to be "premium" content... Or am I missing something here?
Hi Michael, no worries: The agile functionality ("Backlogs" plugin which supports Scrum) is still part of the Community Edition.
But we since added a lot of additional features (both for the Community and Enterprise Edition), including an Agile board (used mostly for Kanban). This agile board is part of the Enterprise Edition.
On this page you can find a comprehensive overview of the features which are part of the Community or Enteprise Edition : https://www.openproject.org/pricing/#features.
If you are curious about the Enterprise features, we offer a 14 day free trial period: https://www.openproject.org/enterprise-edition/.
Hi Robin,
thanks for the clarification, as I can see, there has been quite a few improvements since I last used OP. Will definitely have a look at the new features :)
