Understanding the OpenProject community and the difference between Community and Pro editions
Added by Christophe GESCHÉ 9 days ago
Hi everyone,
I’m a regular OpenProject user and I also contribute, as much as I can, to the French translation. I’d like to better understand how the community works and, in particular, the differences between the Community project and the Pro / Enterprise part.
-
How contributions are shared
Does everyone contribute to everything today?
Are there many volunteer contributors (translation, documentation, testing, etc.), or is core development mainly driven by a small group of employees from the company behind OpenProject?
Are we in a “core team / core product” model with the community providing mostly add‑ons (plugins, translations, small features), or is the split different? -
Full, permanent demo of the Pro edition
Is there a full, permanent demo of the Paying / Enterprise edition, giving a real view of the interface and advanced features?
As a translation contributor, I sometimes hesitate on certain strings because I don’t see where they appear in the UI. A live demo or a permanent environment would be very helpful to better understand the context and improve translation quality. -
Geographic and linguistic profile of the community
Is the community mostly German‑speaking, European, or clearly global?
Is there a dominant language or a particular technical culture that influences development priorities and interface design choices? -
Usage of methods and roles
Are there many users who work with PM² (Project Management Methodology from the European Commission) in combination with OpenProject?
Similarly, is there a significant group of BI managers / data stewards / reporting and data‑pipeline owners who use OpenProject to manage BI or data‑management projects?
I’m asking these questions to better situate my own contribution (translation, user feedback, sharing of practices) within the wider OpenProject ecosystem, and also to see if other French‑ or Belgian‑speaking contributors have similar experiences or needs.
Thanks in advance for your feedback and clarifications!

Update / Self‑reply:
Ok, it’s a bit of a stupid question… I’m actually sitting in front of a real OpenProject instance right now. I can use it to see those translation strings “in context” and check exactly where they appear in the UI.
Thanks for reading, and sorry for the noise 😊
Hi, chiming in to say that I don't think your questions were stupid. Because the Open Source community has so many different ways to operate, it's never a bad thing to get yourself situated with the norms of a specific Open Source community when you first join it.
I can't respond to all your questions, but I can say this about myself as someone who began using Open Project in a self-hosted instance last year:
I'm a U.S.-Canadian citizen who lives in Canada, and I do not speak German. English is my primary language, and with study, I can probably get back up to a secondary school level of French.
We are an organization of two people, and while I am not PMI-certified, much of how I approach project management is from a graduate school course in project management.
