A custom field for documents (A) seems to have no effect other than adding a field to the configuration form for document categories (B) in the Enumerations section.
(A)
<figure class="image op-uc-figure" style="width:50%;"><div class="op-uc-figure--content"><img class="op-uc-image" src="/api/v3/attachments/20379/content"></div></figure>
(B)
<figure class="image op-uc-figure" style="width:50%;"><div class="op-uc-figure--content"><img class="op-uc-image" src="/api/v3/attachments/20380/content"></div></figure>
To make the user's life easier by reducing superfluous options I propose to remove "Document categories" from the Custom fields section.
**Alternative**
Implement <mention class="mention" data-id="36058" data-type="work_package" data-text="#36058">#36058</mention> and document the Custom fields section better (especially what the different types of custom fields are for and where they can be found).
