## What is the Model Context Protocol?
The Model Context Protocol (MCP) is an open standard that allows AI assistants to securely connect to external tools and data sources. Think of it as a universal plug between AI and the software you use every day.
OpenProject's MCP Server makes your project data available to any MCP-compatible AI client. You decide which client and which model to use.
## Ask AI about your projects
### Let your AI assistant explore your OpenProject data in real time
Stop switching between tools to find the information you need. With the OpenProject MCP Server, you can simply ask your AI assistant about project status, work package details or team assignments and get answers sourced directly from your OpenProject instance.
No copy-pasting. No manual lookups. Just ask.
## Features
### Explore projects & work packages with AI
Browse your projects and query work packages through natural conversation. Ask questions like:
* _"What are the open tasks in Project X?"_
* _"Show me all high-priority bugs assigned to me."_
* _"Which work packages are due this week?"_
* _"Give me a summary of the current status of Project Y."_
Your AI assistant reads directly from OpenProject and gives you contextual, up-to-date answers instantly.
### Secure by design: OAuth2 with user context
Security is not an afterthought. The MCP Server uses **OAuth2 authentication**, which means every interaction between your AI assistant and OpenProject happens in the context of the authenticated user.
Your AI assistant can only access what **you** are allowed to see. No more, no less. Project memberships, roles, and permissions are fully respected. There is no shared service account and no elevated access. Every request is scoped to the individual user.
### Your AI, your models, your infrastructure
The MCP Server follows an open standard. **You choose the AI client and model** that fits your needs and policies.
* Use commercial clients like **Claude Desktop** or **Cursor**
* Use **open-source MCP clients** from the growing ecosystem
* Connect your own **self-hosted, local LLMs** running on your infrastructure
No vendor lock-in. No forced dependency on a specific AI provider. You are in full control of which tools you use and where your data flows.
## Full control over your data
> OpenProject is built on the principle of **data sovereignty**, and the MCP Server integration is no exception.
Because you choose your own AI client and model, **you decide where your data goes**. Pair the MCP Server with a self-hosted LLM, and your project data never leaves your servers. No third-party AI vendor sees your information unless you explicitly choose to use one.
This makes the OpenProject MCP Server integration ideal for organizations with strict data protection requirements in the public sector, healthcare, finance, engineering, or any industry where data sovereignty matters.
## This is just the beginning
The MCP Server is currently in **Beta** with **read-only access** to projects and work packages. This is an early release, and we are actively working on expanding its capabilities.
We are building this in the open and your feedback matters. Help us shape the future of AI-powered project management.
_\[Where can we guide visitors to leave feedback?\]_
## Get started now
**AI-powered project management, on your terms.**
Try OpenProject with the MCP Server integration today and experience a new way to interact with your project data.
_\[Also we have to add that this is part of the professional plan\]_
