Work-In-Progress (WIP) limits are a foundational principle of Lean and Kanban methodologies. They restrict the number of work items that can exist in a given workflow stage (board column) at any time. By limiting WIP, teams focus on finishing work before starting new tasks, which reduces context switching, exposes bottlenecks, and improves cycle time.
The WIP limits feature allows authorized users to set a maximum number of work packages per column on any agile board. When the limit is reached or exceeded, the board provides a clear visual warning. The system can be configured to either warn (soft limit) or prevent (hard limit) additional items from being added to the column. Within OpenProject we will go for the soft limit and visual indication that the limit was exceeded.
