# Epic FND-2 - Calculated custom fields for work packages

### Motivation and background information

Today, custom fields on work packages only support manually entered values. When a value is actually a function of other fields (e.g. Reach × Impact × Confidence ÷ Effort for a RICE score, or Likelihood × Severity for a Risk score), users have to compute it themselves outside OpenProject - in a spreadsheet or on paper - and then copy the result into the custom field. This is error-prone (values get out of sync when the source fields change) and pushes teams toward external tools for prioritization and scoring. Our goal is for OpenProject to be your single source of truth.

OpenProject already supports calculated values for project-level attributes. This epic extends the same underlying concept to work package-level custom fields, so that:

*   Prioritization frameworks (RICE, WSJF, etc.) and risk-scoring models can be automated directly on work packages, without manual recalculation.
    
*   Values stay consistent and up to date whenever an input field changes.
    
*   Teams already familiar with calculated project attributes get a consistent UI/UX pattern at the work package level, reducing the learning curve.
    

This is particularly valuable for product and portfolio management use cases, where prioritization scores and risk assessments are core, recurring calculations that currently require manual upkeep.
