# Epic AUTOWORK-381 - Workflow versioning

Project: Stream Workflows & Automations
Status: new
URL: https://community.openproject.org/work_packages/AUTOWORK-381

## Detailed specification

### Motivation and background information

Problem

* A workflow change takes effect immediately for every project that uses the type.

* Admins cannot see what a workflow looked like before a change, who changed it, or when.

* There is no way to return to an earlier workflow configuration.

Pain

* Admins take screenshots or keep spreadsheets of the workflow matrix before editing it.

* Undoing a mistake means re-clicking every transition checkbox by hand, per role.

* Admins cannot answer audit questions about which transitions were allowed at a given date.

### Acceptance criteria

* Every save of a workflow creates a version with author, timestamp and an optional comment.

* Admins see the version history of all workflows and all workflow related changes (incl. transition rules).

* Admins compare two versions and see which changes were done (e.g. which transition rules or statuses were added or removed).

* Admins restore a previous version, which itself creates a new version.

### Out of scope

* Draft workflows and scheduled activation of a workflow version.

* Showing which workflow version applied to a work package at a past date.

## Description

As an administrator who maintains workflows, I would like to have a possibility to understand how the workflow objects evolved over time and would like to have the possibility to go back to a certain version of a workflow object, so that I understand what changes have been made and by whom and can go back to one of the previous versions if necessary.
